Located on the banks of the Shoalhaven River is Nowra, the commercial hub of the Shoalhaven. Originally Terara held the title, during the early to mid-80s, however when the devastating foods of 1865 destroyed many homes and businesses, changes soon began. Land releases in 1870 – 1885 started the development of Nowra, which has seen it grow to become the commercial, residential, medical and educational centre for the South Coast.

The growth of Nowra, particularly over this last year 30 years has been phenomenal with major growth in Federal, State and Local Governments, Defence Industries and the continuing developments of HMAS Albatross with a current establishment of over 1200 troops.

The region around Nowra is a farming community, sustaining a thriving dairy industry, while Nowra itself is the base for many medium and smaller sized businesses. Flinders industrial estate at South Nowra has a wide range of lands for heavy and light industrial types. South Coast Council provides an economic development officer to provide assistance for businesses looking to relocate into the region.

Health is a very large employer in the town with recent additions to the local hospital and a private hospital in Nowra East. Recent additions include the construction of a new linear accelerator for cancer treatments, a 24-hour medical centre and a 14 bed mental health facility.

Nowra and its suburbs provide all that a regional city requires, located just 160km from Sydney, giving easy, quick access to a population of over three million people. This close proximity to Sydney and Wollongong provides employment and business opportunities but still offers a rural lifestyle for local residents.

Land in Nowra is plentiful, starting at $120,000 – $160,000 for 500 – 850 square metres. Houses cover a wide range of prices from $220,000 – $700,000, with home units ranging from $170,000 – $350,000.
